machine hemming curtains - help with MIL's machine!

Am complete novice please be gentle.
Have bought some curtains which I need to take up. Have done the lining and am ready to do the final hemming of the curtains. All the stitches on the machine appear to leave a very visible line of stitches (like a running stitch), but on the original hem, there's only tiny stitches visible - most of the stitch is on the inside. How do they do that? Can I do it on my (MIL's) machine? The instructions tell me a stitch to use for hemming but its worse than the running stitch in terms of visibility.

Not IME. Only commercial machines do truly invisible hemming (well, there is some complicated way of doing it on my machine, but I have never mastered it - it involves fancy folding, and someone may come along who knows how to do it...)

Personally I do final hems on curtains by hand.

Yep, I think that will be the answer. My Mum was horrified to hear I wanted to machine hem them!!! So will keep her happy and do it in front of the Big Occasion on the telly tomorrow.

Thanks.
