Help me choose a new carpet for my lounge!

I currently have a very poor quality cream carpet with minimal underlay in my lounge. It has quite a few marks on it and as we are decorating we are going to replace it. Having lived in quarters all my married life I have never had to buy this kind of thing. Soooooo where do I start? I believe the underlay is as important as the carpet.....is that true?

Helllppppppp!

A biscuit colour with a few fleck type things in, really helps give texture and hides dirt, yes good underlay essential. Get yourself to a good local carpet shop, not a big chain, and ask, they are generally very helpfull.

We have a biscuity brown carpet in both bedrooms with a fleck and it's brilliant. The fleck hides any dirt and disguises any marks too. Was a recommendation from a childminder who has a cream carpet with fleck in her lounge!!

We bought the most expensive carpet we could afford and the middle-of-the-road underlay (the snazzy stuff was too thick and would have meant taking the doors off to sand them down!). We also got a small independent shop to do it and they did a brilliant job. They came out with loads of books so we could see samples in the room and match it to furniture etc.
