Table Linen

How do you normally set your table when you have guests for dinner etc?

I'm trying to buy some new table linen. I have a large off white tablecloth with matching white linen napkins. But I'm wondering should I get placemats or a table runner and not use a tablecloth.
I have a lovely pale oak table so it doesn't necessarily need to be covered.

I tend to use a cloth because I think it looks like I've made more effort! Then I use placemats on top. If less formal, then would just use the mats. Entirely up to you - but a shame not to use the linen now you've bought it!

I always just bouy white. Then i can mix and match different colour fabrics for runners or use some ribbon to tie napkins. for example tomorrow, easter sunay i have some yellow gingham for a runner over the white cloth, at xmas it might be red or silver.

Thanks ladies, maybe I'll just stick with the white cloth, white plates etc scenario.
