Evening! Ants have got into my wheelie bin, there's millions of the buggers, is there any homemade remedies for this seeing as it is late and I've got no ant powder. Thanks.

Boiling water...

Or even cold water I think Confused

Not much help am I? Grin

But I feel your pain - I loathe ants.

reddaisy · 17/04/2011 22:14

It is boiling water. We had them in our house the other week, urgh. We put ant powder around the perimeter of the house and now they are gone.

NormanTheForeman · 17/04/2011 22:21

When you can get to Lakeland, buy ant bait station. Very effective! Until then, maybe boiling water.

easycomeeasygo · 17/04/2011 22:28

Thanks all, well I've done the hot water thing and even added bleach Confused I'll grab some powder tomorrow. normantheforeman we dont have a Lakeland near us, but thank you for your advice.

Cayenne pepper, or chalk dust shaken around, or ant bait (you can make your own with borax and some kind of sweet syrup. The sweetness attracts them and then the borax will kill them).

mollymole · 21/04/2011 17:14

i use boiling water and bleach - leaves them nice and clean

ilovemyhens · 21/04/2011 23:10

They don't do any harm Hmm

We have a colony in our backgarden and they get everywhere, but I'd never want to kill them.

piprabbit · 21/04/2011 23:20

They've been invading our house all week. I hoover them up.
We can't use poison as my toddler would eat it.

Now the wheelie bin is infested too.

I never used to have a problem with ants, but the last couple of years of home invasions is making me jumpy.

MaureenMLove · 21/04/2011 23:21

The ones in the garden are perfectly fine ilovemyhens. The ones that are marching across my work surface, getting into the packet of hot crossed buns - not so welcome!

I get them at this time every year! It's a nightmare. I bleach and keep clear every single nook and cranny, but still they influtrate my work surfaces! It makes me feel so dirty and for a self-confessed Monica in the cleaning stakes, that is not good! Grin

RubberDuck · 21/04/2011 23:21

We have annual issues with ants - forget home remedies. Ant Stop! comes in a spray and once it's dry is safe with pets and kids. We pre-emptively spray round the perimeter of the house every year with the stuff around March time because otherwise we are overrun with ants (they get inside somehow... ).

piprabbit · 21/04/2011 23:23

Last year they marched into my kitchen, up the units and into my baking stores, where they proceeded to gore themselves on the glace cherry syrup. The plastic pot was a black, heaving, ball of ants when I came down for breakfast.

RubberDuck · 21/04/2011 23:29

Yeah, I draw the line at them reaching the kitchen after similar experiences. Hence spraying the outside perimeter pre-emptively! Fuckers are even worse once they get their wings.

MaureenMLove · 21/04/2011 23:30

Ewww! DD came down before me in the morning the other day and I heard her put the dishwasher on and was cleaning the floor! I thought all my dreams had come true, but it was because the ants had invaded! She said there was a stream of ants, all heading for the jar of jam, that has been finished the night before, but not cleaned and disposed of! Yuck!

She left me a half drunk glass of squash that had many drowning ants in it to show me too! Shock

duckypoo · 21/04/2011 23:32

Ugh we had ants in our flat once, it was vile, I once left a coke bottle and a cup in the living room overnight, it was like antapalooza the next morning .

We found it was a dry muddy area opposite our living room and put ant powder down, worked well. Obviously harder if it's a house with more entry points.

I'm sure my Mother had a thing about salt, that ants won't cross it Hmm could be an old wives tale though, try boiling water with salt added.

Honeydragon · 21/04/2011 23:35

tea tree oil keeps them away with out killing them.

mathanxiety · 22/04/2011 05:22

I think it's slugs that can't cross salt.
