Painting a chrome bin - can it be done?

Just revamping our kitchen (as cheaply as possible), and our chrome pedal bin (which is ancient) still works well, but looks decidedly dull and scratched. Do you think I could spray paint it with something like car paint? Or would it all just flake off?

My first thought is to give it a good clean with Brasso, but I really like the look of those coloured bins (but can't justify the £50 it would cost).

Any advice/thoughts please?

I think you just need to find a paint which says that it can be painted onto metal. There is one called Hammerite I think that is for railings and even rusty things so that should be OK. Another thing might be to find some special large stickers and cover the bin in those (available in DIY chains).

Of course - Hammerite! Why didn't I think of that before?? I remember painting my rusty old bike with that when I was a kid. I cleaned the bin with Brasso this afternoon - so it's very shiny now, but still covered in scratches.

Will go and get some Hammerite and will update you when I've ruined my bin revamped it. Thanks.
