Stinky downstairs loo - small boys to blame!

My 2 boys are still rather hit or miss when they wee (youngest is 3) and the toilet seems permanently pongy. I clean it every other day at the very least, often daily, but as soon as the bleach/disinfectant odour settles down you can smell the wee again. It seems impossible to actually clear it. Any tips for wee smell please..?

I wash mine with hot soapy water. Clean the pedestal too and wash the floor. My bathroom smelled like a public urinal even though I was cleaning the loo every day. It's the dribbles of wee on the outside of the toilet and the floor that were smelling.

Yes mine smells like a public loo too. But I already do wash the pedestal and floor as well...this is what I dont understand! It still smells but Im actually fairly thorough! Lino on the floor too so no carpet etc. Not sure what else I can do.

Use biological washing powder? That is what we were advised to do with dog pee, and it does help.

Ok thanks, will try that.

The toilet may have a crack in the waste. That would cause a nasty niff!

You dont have a wooden seat do you?

OopsDoneItAgain · 13/04/2011 21:35

No, a plastic one. Tis a mystery.

Sanesometimes1 · 13/04/2011 23:41

Would get rid of the lino, possible that wee has seeped into joint at the base of the pedestal, best to tile I think, so it's all sealed.

linspins · 14/04/2011 10:28

That's what I was thinking Sanesometimes, that it might be wee that had seeped under the lino? or slightly porous lino? If the loo is clean it must be something else. Walls???

cuppateaplease · 14/04/2011 12:15

It's amazing how far small boys wee can spray! I used to have to clean all the walls/skirting board plus the radiator in an admittedly small downstairs loo. It's a never ending job and I'm not sure boys get much better even when fully grown!

MooM00 · 14/04/2011 14:09

i was going to say the same thing as cuppa, we need to ash the wall next to the loo regularly.

vintageteacups · 14/04/2011 21:57

Yep- I got a load of loo roll the other day as I could constantly smell urine even though cleaning loo every other day, including pedestal and I almost gagged! I reckon it's years of build up (from previous owners - not just ds) of wee dripping down side of pedestal and below tiles that aren't sealed - euw.

We actually changed loo seats yesterday as the old ones kept getting loose and under the plastic bit near the screws (not on all loo seats), were sticky globs of old urine Shock. There was no way of getting to it and we didn't know wee could get under it. Only on unscrewing loo seat, did we find out. Ds sometimes sprays behind loo seat and it must have got uner there!

Boys!!!

Lift the lino, and be prepared to put new floorboards down. Our house in the UK has had 4 boys raised there by the previous owners.

There was carpet in the lavatory, and when we tore it out, the floorboards were sodden with urine. If I say the boys were by then all adults and long grown up and moved away, you'll know what I mean.:o
