Does anyone know anything about curtain making?

Not sure where to put this, but I thought I'd make a start here.

I want some red curtains for the DCs room, with white polka dots. I've fallen in love with a fabric, and I've picked out the blackout lining, too.
The lady from the clothing alterations shop said she'd put the two together, attach the lining, do the hemming etc, but she said curtain making is difficult and she wouldn't be able to do any more than that...

Now, I'm thinking I don't need anything too fancy, and curtain poles keep the curtains too far away from the windows because of how ours are built, so doing the ones in the kids' room with curtain tape would be fine by me.
I've looked on ebay for some, but there are different types, and I don't know what the difference is. I thought curtain tape just went flat onto the top of the fabric in a strip (the only pair of curtains I ever owned with tape had it like that, anyway), but it seems there are ruffles and pinch and who knows what else.
I'm confused.

Anyone know anything?

The tape would be sewn flat, then it is gathered afterwards, unless you want pinch pleats or some such thing maybe. Are there any tutorial on you tube etc?

Very rough curtains = "bag" of material so you have a square of lining on one side and the fabric on the other (with "right" side facing inwards). Stitch all round, leaving top edge open. Then turn inside out, so you have proper sided curtain out the way and attach header tape. Pull header tape ties to gather the curtains, you should have about 1.5 x width of the window minimum to do this. You then attach these onto a curtain rail with those little hook things.

Alternatively, and this is the REALLY lazy version, go get some of those little hooks which have clips on them and hang the material directly from them. That's not really proper curtains though
