Part 2 - If you're house is cluttered and you're Mad as a Hare, join March Fledgling Flyers and get it all square

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/03/2011 22:30

This is the second March Fledgling Flyers thread, all newcomers are welcome.

This is the thread that follows the Flylady website (loosely) for getting your home decluttered and your housework into routines, whilst dispensing tea and chat freely.

We have a fairly relaxed attitude to Flying and take some of the babysteps - such as getting dressed to lace-up shoes - with a pinch of salt. We also strongly advise against signing up for the FlyLady emails.

We will be following Flylady's tips on restoring order to our homes, using one of the following methods:

  1. Babysteps
  2. Babysteps + 15 mins daily decluttering
  3. Babysteps + daily missions

Following the babysteps helps to establish daily routines and build a weekly plan.

If you are overwhelmed by the mess in your home, start with just one thing: shine your sink. It's amazing what you can achieve by just doing a bit at a time!

WhoKnows - "could always spray him with...water and zap him in the microwave..." I read that as you suggesting a method of treating DS2 for threadworm Shock Grin!

No microwave here, I'm afraid. I blew it up several years ago and we never bothered replacing it. No airing cupboard either, for that matter.

Thinking about it, that bear is going to be crawling with all sorts of things, isn't he? Headlice, threadworm, flu viruses...I'm surprised the class bear doesn't contravene some Health and Safety dictum.

I'm going to feel guilty when I see that bear going home with another mum now, aren't I? I'm not embarrassed by headlice, but threadworm seems much, much worse - I'm not sure why.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 23/03/2011 14:44

Oh, poor DS, no I meant the bear! Maybe I'll just back out of this conversation!

OP posts:
Toffeefudgecake · 23/03/2011 14:47

Made me laugh - once I'd realised, I mean!

Off to collect DS2 and take him to a playdate now. I hope he doesn't start scratching his bottom whilst we are there Blush.

swanriver · 23/03/2011 15:13

all our children have had all those things (except impetigo [noo - please don't want to get that, it sounds horrible) Molluscum has finally departed from the twins. For some reason ds1 never got it, but we were very careful about towels.
Toffee I wouldn't worry about it too much, I think there will be loads of other places that threadworms can hide in a classroom.

Push your baby is two weeks old, and you are two weeks post op Shock, please please don't do weightwatchers or paid work, or hoovering for that matter. Enjoy peace and quiet for now, and don't overstretch yourself just because baby is easy.
How lovely that he is though! Grin

Another day of baby niece joy here too at SIL! Fresh air is knackering though...

Now still need to do washing up in this house from breakfast/suppper last night.

Tomorrow I am having a day off from niece, as SIL having someone to help her for day, and then I'm back again on Friday for a few hours.

pushmepullyou · 23/03/2011 16:07

ihate I know what you mean - I am feeling itchy at the thought!

Although that could be due to the fleas I have just found in the cat bed Blush

swan don't worry I am not exactly knocking myself out with enthusiastic activity! I am only planning on a quick whip round with the hand held hoover rather than full on vacuuming which a) I hate and b) is forbidden for 4-6 weeks post section (although I'm sure it would be fine and tbh reason a) is the main driving force!). I am only doing the breastfeeding version of WW as well, mostly because I put on tons of weight last time after I had DD due to too much sitting around and eating cake!

swanriver · 23/03/2011 16:29

Linzer you have telepathically communicated yesterday's events to dd! She is now demanding to go swimming (as some wicked person gave her a new swimsuit for birthday) She is sitting on sofa in said swimsuit with a dangerous expression.
I really don't want to go swimming now, as ds2 has only just come back from his piano lesson [knackered x 2 emoticon] grinds teeth...
but I can see I shall have to, as it is beautiful spring day and no-one has any homework this eve.

elliepac · 23/03/2011 17:10

Ooooooh lot of talk of gross childhood diseases here and i feel the urge to let you know about grossness in elliepac household.

Nits-ds used to get them loads at infant school, almost perpetual but none since he started juniors so i conclude he must have been sat next to a child who always had them. Dd hasnt had them yet and am rather hoping she doesnt get them be ause she wont even let me brush her hair!

Impetigo- never heard of it until ds got it once. Was told he had to stay off school until completely clear which was a nightmare.

Molluscum- another thing never heard of until ds got it. Hung around for ages and was pretty uncomfortable

Worms-dd had once and ds had once separately. toffee you must treat all of you to be sure to get rid because they are very contagious.

Thats it for grossness am doing the swimming lesson run now, maybe i shall chance upon some verrucas!

PositiveAttitude · 23/03/2011 17:53

Helllloooooo!! Grin

Just popping my head round the door to quickly explain my absence for the past week. Blush

Good excuse reason - DD4 ended up very poorly, very quickly and we spent a few days pacing hospital corridors. Sad - We were used to this from when she came to live with us (aged 3) until she was 8/9 this was a regular occurence, but we had been lulled into a false sense of security with no emergency admissions for a few years now.
Now home and well again, so all good now.

However, bad timing as my manic month of March is now turning into a Mega manic 2 weeks at the end of March! Already had to postpone my printing deadline, which was last Monday, but will now have to be next Monday.

So, flying has slumped to the bottom of a very long "to-do" list. Blush
Oh and by the way - it arrived here today, thank you Smile Wink

Humungous waves to everyone. I will try to catch up with all the news on here.

LostInTheBlackHole · 23/03/2011 18:32

Evening.

Quick done list from me only and i have stupidly said i will take ds skating tonight. I must be mad. It will be a late night for him, with lots of noise and lots of people. I must be mad.

Done today

polish car done
Wash upolstry of mum's car done
2 loads washing done and 3rd load washing put on
Make a loaf of tiger bread (seasame bread) done
Take ds for a long walk between picking up from school and getting home done
Sort out sis wedding present - done - now all i have to do is get it but have a few months yet
Sort out nice plans for the weekend done
Coordinate calanders with mother done - my life now feels regimented I hate it but at least i know what is happening when
Quick shop run to purchase stuff for easter bonnet making stuff for ds done - and got mother's day card in same go
Enjoy the sun done

No wonder i feel like i am ready for my bed. I must be mad. Oh well I suppose it means that we have a nice relaxing evening tomo with nothing to do...

...other then packing, tidying, laundry etc, etc...

Do we ever get a break from to do lists when we become parents or is it just a case of a change of length?

Toffeefudgecake · 23/03/2011 19:38

Right, DS2 has eaten his Ovex tablet ("This is to stop you getting an itchy bottom") and I have hoovered and wiped all over his bedroom, changed the sheets, given him clean pants, PJs and a towel and put all our towels, plus his sheets, into the washing machine on 60. We are going to take the tablets ourselves in a day or so, but I think they can give you a tummy upset, can't they? Neither DH nor I can cope with that on working days!

Phew. Hope i've done enough.

DH is now giving DS2 his bath (My instructions: "Put lots of Sudocreme on his bottom!"), whilst I do some more proofreading. I'm not sure how I'm going to charge for this as everytime I note down the time I've started working I'm interrupted by any of the following: DS1; DS2; DH; phone call; knock at the door; text; school run; dinner, etc etc. Am having another bash now and have given into the sound of DH opening a bottle and am drinking some Wine.

Lost - yes, it is mad to take DS skating at 6.30, but I'm sure he'll love you for it and will sleep soundly tonight!

PA - so, so sorry to hear you've been having a stressful and worrying time. I'm glad DD is out of hospital again and life is back to normal.

LadyIsPink · 23/03/2011 19:45

Toffee yey that's good news Smile I mis read your post and thought you were going to do some poo-reading Grin

PA very sorry to hear about your DD being so poorly, so glad to hear she's well again Smile

Have been out in the garden as decorator was painting kitchen ceiling and have caught the sun (please note the name change Wink)
Back garden weeded beautifully i will add.

Toffeefudgecake · 23/03/2011 20:02

LadyisPink (name change noted!) - I think I might be better at poo-reading than proofreading these days. Couldn't believe what I was doing this morning, as I stared intently into the potty. It's weird, isn't it, that our children's poos don't upset us? I couldn't look at anyone else's poo. (Oh, Nettie, I do hope you are not having your dinner whilst reading this).

How lovely to have spent time in the garden, Lady. Today was a really beautiful day here too - so sunny and colourful and Spring-like. It's really cheering.

NettieSpaghetti · 23/03/2011 20:17

LinzerTorte · 23/03/2011 20:45

Have finally finished and sent off my work, and am definitely ready for bed now. Am hoping that tomorrow morning will stay work-free so that I can finally get back to some Flying!

Nettie That's quite enough yuckiness for now, thank you. Grin

Lady Hope you're just a gentle shade of pink rather than lobster-like!

Toffee We've never had any problems with stomach upsets after taking the tablets (and DH has quite a sensitive stomach), although I'm pretty sure we weren't prescribed Ovex. I know we were all supposed to take the tablets at the same time (i.e. on the same day), but a day or so probably won't make too much difference - particularly not if it's only your DS who's affected.

Lost The ice rink here has closed for the season now, so I'm not being pestered any more. Hope you and your DS have fun.

PA Sorry to hear about your DD. It must have been very worrying, but glad to hear she's ok again now.

ellie Hope you managed to avoid verrucas - one thing we haven't had (I'd never heard of molluscum contagium before DD1 got it either, and nor had the GP we took her to as we were back in the UK at the time - he had to call in another GP to diagnose it).

swan I can just see your DD in her swimsuit and dangerous expression. Grin DD2 had another tantrum this evening about missing out on swimming - mind you, DS coming home and telling her "I had an ice cream and you didn't" didn't exactly help matters either.

Off to bed now before I fall asleep over the keyboard - I really must try to be in bed by 10 pm.

elliepac · 23/03/2011 22:23

Aaaaaah, we havent had one of nettie's crazy little ditties for Ages Grin.

Well relatively little flying done here as dh has done it all! Him being out of work does have it's positive side after all Grin. i left him a note this morning asking him if he would do a quick tidy up and he did the whole house!

pa so sorry to hear dd has been so unwell but very glad to hear she is on the mend. It must have been very stressful for you, hope you find some time to relax. Smile.
lady am loving your new name Grin.
linzer that molloscum was a bugger. Took ages to go!
lost you are putting our reputation as the naughty corner reprobates in jeopardy, calm down Wink. hope ds enjoyed skating!

Better go to sleep now. Night night!

swanriver · 23/03/2011 22:24

oh, ds2 had a verucca once Grin It was the excuse of the century for everything..."she trod on my verucca" " you're hurting my verucca" "I can't put my sock on because of my verucca". I think we grew quite attached to it Hmm

well, at least it's not scabies Wink toffee now that is something else...

it's a bit bubonic/Dark Age here on this thread atm Shock

Have done Beavers helping, swmming, mushroom omelette, Brownies' pickup, dd tantrum [small] and lots of vino! Cheers, now to deal with washing up!

PA poor dd, I hope she's not too overwhelmed by everything. Must be v. exhausting to deal with over so many years for you both. I know you will meet the deadline in your usual brilliant way though.

Nettie you are a bit of a star at roundups as well as WhoKnows - journalistic talent no less...

lost before the spring torrents melt the ice - still I know what you mean about pester power - why do we give them these promises? Hmm

swanriver · 23/03/2011 22:29

I was wondering what Netties budget babes referred to...and suddenly I heard dh in the distance ranting 1p 1p you ***s. I must listen to the news more.
Dh and I have instituted RANTER's CORNER with Wine where we rant at each other about all the annoyng people we have encountered durign the day...and thus avoid arguing Grin very therapeutic

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 23/03/2011 22:37

Evening everyone,

Work today, then a bit of useful stuff (sorted out an enormous paperwork mountain and shredded lots of stuff.). Haven?t done any filing, but at least I have sorted out what needs to be filed and what needs to be dealt with.

Toffee ? poor DS had an itchy bottom and the class bear to look after. MN to the rescue with an instand diagnosis and treatment plan for threadworms but confusion all around when Whoknows suggest zapping the class teddy in the microwave Blush. See also Quote of the Day later. Also good news from the school re DS1, that all sounds very helpful indeed.

This led to an interesting discussion about all our least favourite childhood illnesses. Which I don?t really feel like going through in detail again having just eaten.

Ellie was back at work today

LadyinPink had a lovely anniversary but has had a namechange due to catching the sun in March!

PMPY popped back in to say hello

Systems used her strike time to good effect and conquered a huge filing pile

Swan is still being a devoted aunty but feeling less than enthusiastic about going swimming with the DCs

Cobwebs had a productive time at the allotment

PA popped in with news of her DD who has been ill, glad she is on the mend, hope you cope OK with your manic workload. Excuse note accepted, Flying is just going to have to wait.

Lost made a list, nice plans for the weekend featured, that sounds like my sort of list.

Quote of the Day is from Toffee "I showed Bear how to do magic. Bear helped kook dinner. Then I gave him worms to share with everyone at school". Second place goes to Nettie with her poo ditty! Or should that be shitty?

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 23/03/2011 22:40

x-posted with Ellie - good for DH.

and Swan - love Ranters Corner. DH and I do that too, say all those things we'd never dare say in public. Trouble is we'll go past people in the street and he's saying loudly "Is that the mad Canadian with the very bad hair you told me about?"

Rink here is open all year. Ds loved it and has only just been shoved into bed naughty mummy He managed the whole two hour session practically which was nice and took the opinion that it wasnt cool to be seen with mum which i enjoyed Grin hopefully tomo morning wont be too tricky. Actually asleep without sleep meds tonight Shock

Must sleep too. night.

Toffeefudgecake · 24/03/2011 00:26

Good night, Lost. I'm glad the skating expedition went well.

WhoKnows - I got Quote of the Day! Whoopee! [proud emoticon]

Linzer - glad to hear you've finished your work. Hope you get a proper Flying day tomorrow. Thanks for the advice re the threadworm medicine.

Swan - Ranter's Corner is a great idea Grin.

Ellie - gold star to your DH for Flying today Smile.

Nettie - that's enough yuckiness for now! (Though I know I started it Blush).

Ihate - you are definitely some kind of Supermum. I love the way that, in the midst of your long list, you casually mention making a pavlova! Envy

PositiveAttitude · 24/03/2011 06:29

Good morning everyone!

Apologies for lack of personals, but thank you all for your best wishes.

Well, today is my day off, officially. BUT due to being beyond my original deadline i am going in to work to get my head down and get publication ready for printing. Just a few tweaks needed, although I always feel I could tweak forever and I have to get to a point when I say "no more".

I am also feeling pants after DS has been a bit too generous with his cold germs!! Hmm

So far today I have:
Cleaned out the drain in the wetroom - disgusting job that everyone in the house leaves to somebody else!!
S&S (yay love this babystep!!)
Loaded Tumbler

I need to:
Load washing machine
Clean Bunnikins!
Go to work
A little shopping
Hopefully I will have a duvet afternoon (probably with DS who is ill, too) doing absolutely nothing, maybe with my "Grease" dvd, which is my all-time feel good film Grin.

Mahoooosive waves to everyone, "see" you all later...

feetheart · 24/03/2011 06:39

Morning all.
Sorry I wasn't around to join in with yesterday's yuckiness though you made me laugh a lot :o
Has also raised the, rather unpleasant, thought that the spots on DD's chin might be the dreaded mollosum - grits teeth.

Toffee - huge sympathies re class bear. We had DS's class monkey over the weekend and I did wonder where he had been when DS insisted on taking him to bed! We also had big real tears when DS woke on Monday morning as he knew Bobo had to go back home :(
Did enjoy reading some of the other entries though, including a brilliant one from one of the Muslim mums. Her daughter had him on a Friday and wanted him to join in with prayers so they dressed him up in a headscarf. Apparently Bobo prayed for world peace whilst the little girl prayed for a new Barbie. Said more to me about religious/cultural similarities than any amount of more 'highbrow' discussions :)

Lost - glad DS enjoyed the skating, hope he slept all night.

PA - lovely to hear from you though sorry you've been having a rough time. Must have been all the harder to cope with having not had to do so for a good few years. Hope you all recover soon. Good luck on mad deadlines.

Swan - LOVED the image of DD sitting in a swimsuit with a dangerous expression :o

Flying has taken a bit of a back seat again this week as I have been concentrating on work. Need to be caught up as next week I will be spending every lunchtime at school helping children make something for Mother's Day. We may have taken on a bit too much as there are 400 children and that's a lot of £1 coins/50ps/pennies/etc before we have even got to the drawing and sticking part of things. I may be even more of a wreck by this time next week!

Today's list involves:

  • Morning routine
  • Swimming with friend
  • Back home to sort out hair and maybe tidy up!
  • Lunch with friend's
  • Early dinner for DC
  • DS's swimming lesson
  • Collapse

Not much Flying in there either, this may explain the state of the house Hmm

have a good day everyone and hope you have sunshine (though not too much Pink!)
