How to clean my carpet

Had new carpet installed in most rooms and stairs. Whilst I try to hoover it every other day, does anyone brush theirs and if so, what with? The hoover just does not seem to get rid of dry bits of mud etc. I am reluctant to go down the Vanish carpet cleaner route as it needs to be left on for hours which would be really difficult with the two children

I can remember my Mum brushing the stairs when we were little. She hoovered everywhere else but had a hand brush, like the sort you would use with a dustpan and brush, with really really stiff bristles. I remember is because I was always amazed by the muck that came out of what appeared to my (child's) eyes to be clean enough stairs.
With mud I would let it dry untouched, then hoover it, then brush it with a really stiff brush and then hoover again.
Hope it works!
