Filing household bills, how long to keep them for.

For years I have kept all my bank statements, household bills, pay cheques etc etc etc. Everynow and then I throw some out! I decided on the nothing past 10 years. But what do other people do, if I'm busy and can't get round to filing my desk piles higher and higher, then it's too daunting to attack. What do other people do?

I think I read somewhere 6 years for bank statements and probably 2-3 years max for other bills...

You could always enter info to an excel file if you really wanted to know costs over the years....

Bank statements get shredded as soon as they are checked. Household bills - only ever keep the last one - for ID porposes. Salary slips - last 3 months. Tax related info 7 years.

Most info is held online and can be accessed quite easily.
