You know the metal grill that pops out? Should there a) be a kind of pad thing above it, of the disposable variety or b) be nothing but a big gaping hole, the grill collects the crap.

Me and DH have differing views on this!!

i put some padding in mine but only because the wind used to howl down it making the kitchen really cold.

i think it is meant to be open though so it can suck all the smells away.

AMumInScotland · 09/03/2011 16:20

Normally, a disposable pad thing which catches the smells and grease. There are different sorts depending on whether your extractor goes to the outside or just puts the air back into the room. But the metal grill on its own won't do much.

Udderly · 09/03/2011 16:24

Yeah, see thats what I think too. DH is of the other opinion. It goes outside if that makes any difference. Think I will get some of those pad thingies and just bung em up there.

Mine quite definitely has metal strips which hold the pad in place!

cuckooclock · 09/03/2011 22:23

Mine has 2 filters in it. One a white pad thing (that should be replaced every 3-6 months and a round thing that contains something to absorb bad smells. That should be replaced every year. Notice I say should.... shall I admit.....

ChasingSquirrels · 09/03/2011 22:27

mine has a white pad (bit like a thick paper pad) and a black pad (more like the scrubby bit on sponge scrubbers).
The white pad has lines on it that either appear or disappear when it needs changing (as you can see I change it when it needs doing!! lol).

ceres · 10/03/2011 07:28

it depends on the type of extractor you have.

our extractor only has the metal grilles - these are the filters and need to be washed regularly.

Udderly · 10/03/2011 09:13

Oh no cares! That's DH's theory!!

we have 2 pads in our extractor too - a black charcoal filter and a white grease filter.

ceres · 10/03/2011 20:16

sorry! if it's any help the extractor is pretty crap.
