we've had it for 2 weeks and havent cleaned it yet......apparently you are meant to do it gradully- like a tenth of the water per week? so as not to shock fish with change of temperatue.....advice please

I never, had a medium sized gold fish bowl and I used to just put the fish into another bowl and clean it out, all the gravel at the bottom and wiped it as it can get a bit slimy! But then just put warm not cold water back in, the fish was alive for years!

But I would google it as I would not want your fish to die as a result of my advice! My fish may have just been a super fish Grin

Fill up a bowl with cold tap water and let it stand for a few hours so you know it's warmed up. Then remove 10% of the water from the tank and replace it with the water from the bowl.

The best way to remove water is with a syphon which you can get from the pet shop. You can use it to clean the bits of dirt from between the gravel so it doesn't rot.

If you have a filter (you really should have one) use the old tank water to wash out the filter. The chlorine in fresh tap water kills the useful bacteria in the filter.

Don't remove the fish from the tank while you do it.

You need to buy water conditioner from the pet shop to remove the chlorine from the water, no idea how it works you just put in how much they say on the pack.

Goldfish have a reputation for being mucky fish.
