Shoe storage in the hall

At the moment, we have a metal rack and it's driving me crazy - they fall off, they don't get put on properly, and it's a big old mess.

There isn't that much space, so ideally it needs to be something quite shallow though it could be quite long, and even fairly tall.

It's a period house, and so I'm trying to steer clear of anything too modern - which sadly rules out Ikea as everything there looks very sleek.

I don't even really know what I want - was tempted to get someone to make me a bespoke thing with holes for pairs of shoes and a bench that the dcs could sit on, but really don't want to spend £££.

Any thoughts? I did wonder about some kind of pine bench with a shelf underneath - I would strip it and paint it, so not fussed about the colour.

If you can save me from shoe hell, I will be extremely grateful.

How about a small sideboard or cupboard with shelf storage inside.

Arrrgggh I feel your pain. I now use an old wooden toy box/storage box to chuck all he shoes in. It's so much better/tidier!

We use 2 big wicker IKEA baskets - I gave up with any kind of order long ago Grin

I'm with valium.

We have shoe racks for 'good' shoes in our bedrooms, and a big storage box for wellies, trainers and other 'chuck 'em in and find 'em later' type shoes in our hall.

Shoe racks are infuriating, ime.

Somehow the baskets look neater than the messy shoe racks iykwim?

I have <a class="break-all" href="http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250683722238&ru=shop.ebay.co.uk:80/%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm570%26_nkw%3D250683722238%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1#ht_3160wt_905" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this which just fits into a specific space.
The dc's have a drawer each and mine go in the understairs cupboard.
If I had more room I would have got a longer one, there are lots of similar things about.

I got a shoe cupboard from Argos - its slim and looks tidy.
