I bought some every day stuff from sainsburys. It was cheap and chips like mad! It is also lethal in the microwave as the cups including handles heat up to an insane temperature in 1 minute!

Its pretty thick china (or whatever it is) and the glaze is v thin. Hence the chipping I think. Next time I'm spending more on something finer (quality and feel) as this was a very false economy. Hmm

Sorry no suggestions - I'd like some too I think! :)

You need porcelain ones. Ikea 365 is tough and cheap.

Imnotaslimjim · 28/02/2011 19:42

I 2nd the Ikea one, its brilliant. My dad is super clumsy, drops things all the time and he still has a full set after 6 months!

corns12k · 28/02/2011 19:47

yes mine were cheap sainsburys
I've just ordered some Denby from TJ Hughes but will look out for that Ikea stuff - thanks Smile

I've got bone china from sains, none of it's chipped after two years.

I've heard denby lasts really well.

DaffadownDilly · 28/02/2011 22:35

Ikea ones are great.

CrystalQueen · 28/02/2011 22:38

Our Denby set (wedding present) has been going strong for ten years. No chips.

starfishmummy · 28/02/2011 22:44

I have porcelain (or bone china) from sainsburys. Plain white so if they discontinue I can still find stuff to go with it. It's several years old ans still going strong.

Our best stuff is habitat, and doesn't get used often enough for me to tell.......

PercyPigPie · 28/02/2011 22:46

We are using a Denby set that has been going for about 20 years!

mellie64 · 01/03/2011 10:39

our denby plates bounce, i have dropped them a few times over the last 10 years and the always get bashed in the dishwasher, i have only actually broken one and it feel from a height onto a limetone floor. you can often find someone doing them half price, i think they ahve some sets half price online in their own store. jarrolds, HOF, debenhams and JL are also places to look for them cheap. my SIL has two denby sets (one for best) but we use ours all the time its the only set we have and there are 6 of us so it gets alot of use, its been fantatic and looks great as well, we have the imperial blue.

corns12k · 01/03/2011 10:49

I'm liking the idea of bouncing denby! I ordered 2 sets from TJ hUGHES as they were so bargainous.

The IKEA 365 are pretty good, but if you really want unbreakable, go to a seconds restaurant supplier - those plates can be dropped from on high with no damage whatsoever. I know - mine are about 10 years old and have survived parties, house moves and children. Very impressive!

corns12k · 01/03/2011 11:42

good idea!

NormanTheForeman · 01/03/2011 11:44

We also have Denby, and they are realy good. It's very hard to chip them. I think I have only chipped two (out of a large number) in 14 years....

missmapp · 01/03/2011 11:45

Another vote for denby. I am not careful AT ALL , we were given ours for our wedding 12 yrs ago, and they remain unchipped!!

smerchant · 01/03/2011 12:29

Correlle is good, not easiy available but you can buy them in some asian crockery shops or online.

amazonianwoman · 01/03/2011 12:32

Another vote for Ikea 365 - great for day to day plates, have about 18 that are still going strong after 10 years of use - no chips at all.

corns12k · 04/03/2011 07:29

My denby has arrived and is too big for the cupboards Hmm will have to rearrange my kitchen...

look out for "stoneware" rather than porcelain, we still have a complete set of plates, cups, bowls. we got it when dh and I moved in together 6 years ago. no chips and only one serving bowl lost, because I dropped it when full with hot vegetables...
