Washing machine problem

Has anyone else had this problem with their washing machine, half way thru the cycle, the big dial, (the one where you select the cycles) just starts to go click-click-clicking all around, and does not finish washing.
My machine is a 'Indesit'.
Its driving me mad, and I cant afford a new one.

Mine does that when there is something stuck in the filter - or maybe the pipe. If it's the filter I can fix it by unscrewing the thingy at the front and retrieving the sock or coin or whatever.
