Spare room - double bed, 2 singles or a zip & link? Or something else?

I have a big spare room and it needs bed. Ideally, I'd have a Zip & link one, so I could have 2 singles for when we have foreign students stay but could put them together to have a double (well, a superking size) for when we have our friends stay. Is there a cheaper alternative to zip and links? They cost a fortune and I object to paying more for the spare room than I did on my own bed.

why not look out for the john lewis one on eBay? you can sometimes get ex display ones for about 300 quid. the sleep room does a nice- looking one ( with a much better mattress) but it is about £700 ...

I spent ages poring over this topic and ended up buying a platinum raised aerobed for about £100. of course that doesn't solve the issue if u have say kids to stay and need 2 singles but I too balked at the price!

I never think of ebay - I'll have a look, thanks. Will see if there is anything about in the sales.

I just can't decide what is going to best and most comfortable.

Buy two single divans, then get a matress topper from ikea that is 180cm wide. When you want the double bed just put the topper on then use a superking sized fitted sheet to keep the matresses together. Simple.

Is a zip and link bed the same as a single bed with another bed underneath that you pull out?
My mum has one of these, does not take up as much room as two singles.

I think that's what I'll end up doing, Frenchfancy. Seems easiest (and cheapest)
