How do you dress your bed?

I'm about to refurbish my bedroom (wooden floors, dark wood furniture) and really want to make it a beautiful place to sleep.

I've ordered some new linen from House of Fraser after recommendations on the bed linen thread, but I'm not sure how to make the bed look like a showroom bed. Do I need extra pillows, cushions and throws? Any ideas would be appreciated.

We have a dark wooden bed and bedroom furniture. We have cream walls with a feature wall, wallpapered in cream with bold cranberry red flowers on it. The curtains are the same.
Our bed linen is cream. We have a shiny dark red throw from John Lewis which is generally folded across the bottom of the bed to add a bit of colour but which can be pulled up when it is really cold.
We do have 2 dark red decorative pillows which can be placed at the top of the bed and it does look great when we do it but to be honest most of the time they are just clutter that get in the way. I like things very simple personally.
MIL has lots of pillows on her guest bed and it does look really beautiful but we always have to find heaps of homes for them while we are staying as there is nowhere obvious to put them all.

I used to put lots of cusions and different throws on our bed but DP was moaning that he had to throw them all on floor at bedtime cos he couldnt sleep Hmm We just have a furry throw from Next that i drape over the bottom of the bed over the duvet and we pull up if its cold (everynight since 1st of december lol) Would love to have a 'showroom' bedroom but got sick of DPs moaning :(

Dress my bed???

Most mornings I don't even have time to make it ...

No-one ever sees it apart from me and dh so what is the point?

Plumm · 20/01/2011 20:04

I love a well dressed bed. I hate going to bed when the bed isn't made.

we usually make it on the way into it...

Panzee · 20/01/2011 20:07

My bed is usually dressed with the clothes I thought about wearing that morning and books I started and forgot about. Somewhere there's a duvet and there are lots of pillows strewn about. :o

We have an Anta blanket a bit like this across the bottom of the bed, and a v-shaped pillow amongst the other pillows.

We used to have cushions but they're really quite unhygienic - floor-bed-floor-bed - so we don't anymore. The v-shaped pillow case changes with the sheets.

I dress my bed in the same way I dress myself - by chucking a few questionable bits of fabric on and hoping/assuming no one is looking Grin

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 20/01/2011 20:17

Dress my bed??!! You have too much time on your hands...Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 20/01/2011 20:21

I have a nice cream bedspread from the White Company.

It looks lovely with my dachshund on, or more often than not, under it Grin

LemonDifficult · 20/01/2011 20:23

What about a bolster pillow? I love them for making the bed look inviting as they don't give any gap (as two second pillows do) and they're great if you both like to sit up reading.

Plumm · 20/01/2011 20:28

I promise I don't have too much time on my hands, I just love a well dressed bed Smile

I'll post a photo when it looks gorgeous then you'll all be jealous!

The 'loads of useless slippery small cushions' look is a pet hate of mine. Inevitably they are cheap horrid fabric, get in the way and need to be put somewhere else every night. Moronic.

OP, why not have a look at the 'dressed' beds in a big store like John Lewis, or in a catalogue like The White Company? Or there is a shop here in Edinburgh called And So To Bed which I think is a chain, very expensive but good for inspiration. Maybe they have a website or catalogue?

Guacamole · 20/01/2011 20:38

I don't do lots of cushions either, drives me nuts, however I do do lots of pillows! We have 3 each. 1 big square one each, 2 rectangular ones each. I have a nice throw at the bottom. And I only every buy white bed linen.

GeorgeEliot · 20/01/2011 20:38

Plumm, I bet you put on makeup to do the school run too?

Carrotsandcelery · 20/01/2011 21:40

lal123 we just call that "airing the bed" Wink

Plumm · 20/01/2011 22:32

No time for make-up, I'm too busy dressing the bed Smile
