How can i brighten cream carpets-bleach?

We have cream carpets in our rented house and there are some ground in stains from previous tenants and some water marks etc aswell as a general grubbiness that comes from having such light carpets and kids etc. (i personally wouldn't have chosen cream carpets but hey ho).

So hoe can i lift the stains and lighten the carpets back to what i think they should be?

Can i use bleach in my carpet shampooer and if so, is it normal bleach or laundry bleach and at what dilutions?

Any other suggestions? Please bear in mind that these carpets are throughout the entire house so something like vanish powerfoam may not be the easiest thing for me to use.

TIA

Hire a steam cleaner, or get someone round to do it. You won't regret it.

We did this in a rented house (to clean off the mess we'd made Grin) and the results were stunning- worth every penny. We got someone to do the whole house for about £100. Worth every penny.

Thanks tethersend, was it a normal carpet cleaning company that used steam cleaners? i guess companies like that would be listed in the yellow pages or something?

I found them in the local paper- ring around and get a few quotes though, they can vary wildly.
