I'm not normally one to make resolutions but this year for my own sanity I am going to resolve to do the following in order to have a tidier house!

Not to buy any more toiletries/make up and use up what I have! I could open a small chemists with my stash. Obviously this will clear up storage space eventually and save me money.

Use all the cleaning stuff I have and not stock pile anymore. I only forget I have it and buy more!

Be ruthless and not hoard things. I will need help with this- any tips?

I think I need to join you on this one dietcoke.
The tip my mum always used to give me was to write a shopping list and to stick to it.
I tend to panic buy eg. "well it won't go off and if I have 2 it is better than none at all", then go home and find 2 in the cupboard already.

Hi carrotsandcelery.

Yes agree with need to make a list. Planning on going through food cupboards and only buying top up shops for next month.

That sounds like a plan - I will join you on that one.
I will also need to go through the bathroom cupboard and the cleaning stuff cupboard. I think I might make a list and blutak it inside those cupboards so I know what is in there and cross it off when it is used up. Do you think that would work?

dietcokesholidaysarecoming · 28/12/2010 11:02

That sounds like an excellent idea.

We are hopefully moving mid feb so the less to pack the better!

Am going to sort through DS bookcase too- so many books not read!

I know schools and libraries are always keen to receive books in good condition. Their budgets have been slashed.

AH i live for lists mine this year is to remember to send birthday cards and to start or plod through my wrighting!

Carrotsandcelery · 28/12/2010 12:58

Birthday cards is a good one too junglemum - I always remember some but not the same ones each year.
My Auntie does them all at the start of the month and leaves them on the hall table. She pencils a posting date on each envelope and my Uncle picks up the appropriate ones each day on his way out.
I imagine you have to watch out for the birthdays at the start of the month - slot them into the month before or something - but she rarely sends a late card.
Not sure it would work for me but, that said, I haven't tried it. Maybe another resolution for 2011.

I am finding stuff like this a little easier each year as the dcs get a little older.

Carrotsandcelery

That is an excellent way of remembering cards! When we move I am definately setting up a system like that!

i tidy/sort one drawer and one cupboard every day!! doesn't take long....and eventually you get to the point where they are relatively neat anyway. i do one upstairs when the youngest is playing in the bath. and another downstairs during the day

they never get out of hand that way. and it works

onadietcokebreak · 30/12/2010 13:07

Ilovetiffany- i wish I was that disclipined.

Today is the food cupboards turn. I am making a meal planner from what we have and a very small shopping list. May send DP as he is more likely to stick to list!

Next week when I am back at uni going to run freezer down.

Carrotsandcelery · 30/12/2010 22:02

ILoveTIFFANY how do you maintain the discipline?
I haven't done anything yet. I am starting a tidy up of toys tomorrow as we are hosting New Year's Day lunch for the family and all the toys downstairs need to be toddler safe.
I think the proper clear out and discipline are going to have to wait until dh goes back to work and dcs go back to school.
Keep all the tips coming though please ladies!
