Getting shoe polish out of white sofa and carpet!

Some guest's children at my Granny's house accidentally trod black shoe polish into the carpet and rubbed the back of their shoes on the white sofa leaving big black marks. It was just before a funeral and got left for a few days so is now dried. What do we do??

Well, my first thought would be a warm iron, on top of brown paper. There is wax in shoe polish, so that should bring some of it out, at least.

Then I'd try with Liquid soda chrystals. You an buy it very cheaply in Wilkinsons. It has no bleach in it, so you can use it straight from the spray bottle. I find, if nothing else works, that always does!
