Dehumidifiers- do they eventually stop dehumidifying whilst still appearing to be running?

Ours has been running pretty much full-time since 2004, in the laundry room where it dehumidifies what is an otherwise arctic room and dries the washing at this time of year, and I really feel that it is taking far longer than it used to dry a load of washing. Do they gently wind down, or do they just carry on functioning perfectly until the day they give up in your experience/knowledge?

Also, if it is giving up, I will need to replace it. Does anybody have any recommendations about model/make. It would need to be a large capacity one (5+ rooms). TIA
