How do I make fleeces soft again?

I've been given lots of lovely clothes, blankets and baby things by a friend, as I'm expecting in February, but a lot of the fleece items are hard and scrubby-looking. Is there a way to restore the softness?

Try washing them with a double dose of Calgon.

Wash them and use lots of fabric conditioner. Then tumble dry them. That should work.

Has that worked? My little boy has a couple of lovely fleecy tops which have gone all hard. What makes them hard, do you know? Would it help washing them by hand?

I have no tumble dryer, unfortunately...
