Are self-cleaning ovens any good?

I am sooooooooo fed up with our oven. It seems to permanently be smoky, no matter how often it's cleaned. We have tried an oven cleaning company (Ovenu), which helped a little, but it went back to smoking almost immediately. I don't think I cook in any particularly odd way - I do quite a lot of roast chicken, which I suppose is a bit "spattery", but don't think I am doing anything that should be causing a problem. We think the oven is about 10 years old (it was here when we moved in).

I am seriously thinking about replacing it, hopefully with one that doesn't fill the kitchen with smoke everytime I turn it on or set off the smoke alarm all the time.

Does anyone have a self-cleaning oven? Does it really self clean? What brand have you got and is it good?

Thanks in advance.

I have one and have never used the self clean function as you need to take the shelf rails out and I can't work out how! You also need to clean it manually first which seems to defeat the object! Don't think I'd have one again.

I have one of these ovens. Got it 3 years ago when the kitchen was redone. I love it!

Gets all dirty and greasy, you remove the shelves, and the 'shelf holders' on the side of the oven and switch on.

I'm not sure how much electricity it uses (heats the oven up to 500 degrees) and cleaning takes two hours, but once finished all I need to do is wipe with a damp cloth.

The only issue is that it doesn't clean the glass door, and after 3 years that needs some attention, but I wouldn't be without- I'm now not embarassed to have my oven light on!

I have a NEFF and I think it was quite expensive (around £650), but next time, I'll be buying another!

Gosh, two pretty different views! If they work, then really want one! Just had a look on the Neff site, they do three pyroltic ones. Might have to pop somewhere that sells them to have a look. I really cannot bear the prospect of cleaning the oven again just to have it just as smoky as it was before one meal later. I think possibly muck gets into the fan/behind the grill bits where we can't reach to clean them, so it is just never really clean...

I love mine. It stinks to high heaven while cleaning (we always leave the back door open) but my days of scrubbing a manky oven are over. It comes up as new, apart from the glass door and shelves which still need elbow grease, sadly.

They take a lot of electricity and still require elbow grease. I use a professional cleaner once a year - he gets my oven shining like new.

Thanks very much, everyone, for input... still can't decide, though!
