Zipper on DS's school jacket

OK so I am useless at all things sewing related and I don't even know the right name for the thing I am asking about.

DS has a 'reversible' school coat (fleece one side and 'waterproof' the other).

The zipper thing (the whole device you put the end of the zip in including the pull-y-uppy-bits) has come off and got lost.

Can I just get a replacement 'bit'? I was thinking of going into the market in town tomorrow to a needle'n'thread type shop and asking if they have something that will do.

But will they? And if so, what am I asking for?! As it is 'reversible', does this make a difference?

if it's reversible, the actual pulling bit will need to be able to go over the top of the bit that joins the two sides of the zip together so that you can use it from both sides. Have you tried a dry cleaners- mine mended a zip on my coat for about a fiver

i can visualise what the zipper thing looked like, so just about know what you are talking about seeline!

there is a dry cleaner's in town too - so if i draw a blank in the sewing shop, i shall beat a hasty retreat to the dry cleaners. thanks!

thanks - yes, will take it with me. he does have a spare, fortunately!
