dog smell in new house

Any suggestions about how my friend can get rid of the disgusting doggy/ catty smell in her new house? She's really got to get rid of the carpets I think, but she can't afford to replace them at the moment. It really is horrible. The previous owners had two German Shepherds and three long haired cats. Not saying all houses with pets smell, but this one really does.
Thanks

When I moved into this house the previous tenant had let the dogs poo everywhere. You need to take up all the carpets or have them cleaned.

I had to take up the flooring in the bathroom and let it dry as they had urinated all over it and it was underneath, took two months before the smell went.

Yuk!

Lots of nice smelling candles and bleaching woodwork and stuff, you have to hide the smell initially takes a while to go.

Sorry.

try bicarb of soda, I have used it when the kids have been sick.Takes the smell away. sprinkle on leave for a while then hoover up.Cost effective and safe for kids/pets. I do tend to agree with taking the carpets up and bleeching the boards though.
