Mystery thing on my wall!

We've lived in this house for nearly three years, but I've never figured out what this 'thing' is. I'm hoping someone can shed some light, please. :)

  • It's on the wall, halfway up the staircase, about a metre up.
  • It's white, rectangular and about 15cm high.
  • There's a flap on it, with the word "BEAM".
  • Behind the flap is a circular hole in the wall. There doesn't seem to be much else.

A friend said it was a central vacuum system. I don't know what this is, and I don't know how that would work! Confused

Any ideas?? Thank you!

tis the entrance to a worm hole. The 'Beam' signifies that the controller needs to switch on the focusing beam (else you don't arrive in one piece)
hth.

pastaplease · 29/10/2010 22:56

Yes, that does help, thanks. I can't wait to ask the estate agent to explain that to viewers when we come to sell! Grin

southeastastra · 29/10/2010 22:59

so you have lived with a vacuum cleaner in your wall for three years and didn't know it Shock

pastaplease · 29/10/2010 23:00

That must be it, thank you babyicebean! :)

I wonder how that works then. I don't have a hose or anything. Hmmm. I've never heard of this before.

Mystery over. GUTTED it's not a wormhole. Now, where did I put my copy of Donnie Darko?

Yes, southwastastra, how rubbish am I??

I have a crappy hoover, which is always breaking down, so this could be a godsend!

Sorry, I meant southeastastra.

AnyFuleKno · 29/10/2010 23:02

oh my god, that's the maddest thing I've seen in ages!

Aren't you curious to try it pasta?

southeastastra · 29/10/2010 23:03

Grin i think i saw them once on tomorrow's world

pastaplease · 29/10/2010 23:04

I am! I don't have hose though.

I like the video on the site which has a picture of a small child using it. Yep, this definitely has potential. A new hobby for DD, I think!

That's so space agey.. wonder where all the crap goes??.. in the walls?(joking)

There must be a big bin bag outside..

pastaplease · 29/10/2010 23:09

I just had another peep into the hole. It's black and whistly in there.

OP posts:
Jellykat · 29/10/2010 23:12

So where does the hole lead to?? must be outside if its whistly!

Eaglebird · 29/10/2010 23:14

Bump for someone to tell us where all the crap that's vacuumed up goes to.

pastaplease · 29/10/2010 23:17

This is odd! The garage is behind it, but there's nothing on the wall of the garage, so it must be going into something in the wall. But how do I empty it? Hmmm.

OP posts:
Jellykat · 29/10/2010 23:20

Can you drop a marble in it.. see how long it takes to thud.. like a 'rock down a well' type occurrence?

CreeperSutherland · 29/10/2010 23:21

How strange!

I thought my switch-that-switches-nothing halfway up a wall was strange.

That is just bizarre!

southeastastra · 29/10/2010 23:22

is there no on and off switch at all

pastaplease · 29/10/2010 23:26

I've got the torch out and can see something, which looks like a single-pronged plug. Must be for the hose, I s'pose.

No on and off switch, southeast. Nothing.

I have a light switch that doesn't switch anything on in my hallway too, Creeper. Very odd.

I have used a sysytem like that. In a house in Australia. It all gets sucked into a central collection point housed in the garage.

pastaplease · 29/10/2010 23:31

cece, that's interesting. I just spoke to DP, who's more interested in the Heavy Metal documentary on BBC4 at the moment, and he said there's nothing in the garage.

He's probably wrong though.

Just discovered another "BEAM" plug in the cupboard under the stairs.

Alas, there is no tank in the garage, so it looks as though the people we bought from took it with them. :(

Oh well, mystery solved!

How come you have a hollow wall though? I don't have walls with holes in where its dark and whistly in the black hole. Is this an internal wall? Maybe there is a secret room?
