Rug doctor / professional carpet cleaners

I have a beige carpet in my living room which is quite grubby in places. The carpet is at least seven years old but I can't afford to buy a new one at present. I've had the room painted and want to make the carpet look good without spending too much money. I have a vax cleaner and have used it regularly over the last two years. Judging by the colour of the water when I empty it, it picks up quite a lot of dirt, although the carpet still looks grubby in places afterwards. Would a rug doctor or professional cleaner make it look any better? How much would it cost? Any other suggestions?

rug doctor is pretty cheap - about 30 for a day i think - morrisons and local dry cleaners have them. we have 3 kids and a dog and made our carpets come up nearly like new each time we used them.

rug doctor is £20 for 24 hours here. Plus the cleaner itself - another £20.

Bloody excellent though!

I second that. The only thing I would say is, when you use it make sure you overlap each strip of carpet you've just done. My father-in-law (bless) "helped" us and did my little boy's room, but did not do this overlapping and I ended up with stripes of dirt in an otherwise very clean carpet...

Having just moved to a new home in the countryside where there were kids and dogs, our cream carpets needed a good clean! One go with rug Doctor worked miracles! The stains and smells went. And it was quick and easy to use ( and fun!)It cost £19.99 for 24 hour rental to hire and is available from all main DIY stores. A litre of Rug Doctor carpet detergent, which is enough for two rooms costs £19.99. And if you have any particularly nasty stains there is Urine Eliminator and Red stain remover.

Does the Rug Doctor come with any attachments? I would love to use one on my stair carpet and my sofa arms. Thanks.
