I've found lots of cake stands where the base is often glass and raised, but I'd like one where the base is wooden and flat. Anyone?

look for cheeseboards instead

I got a cheese board like that from John Lewis many years ago. Very nice it is too (and could be used for cakes as it doesn't have anything cheese related on it - twee mouse as a handle or the like)

The Nigella cheese dome is nice

The only problem with glass lids on wooden base is that often they do not sit perfectly so air gets in and cake go stale quickly.
Glass on glass is better but preferably a base which hs some kind on rubber rim for thlide to "sink" into to create an air lock is best.

Brilliant thanks so much iMum you may be right, but I'm very shallow and just want it to look nice (grin).

Have you looked at the Pampered Chef stuff - they might have something.

Lisbeth Dahl sell them in lots of diff sizes. For cakes, not cheese; some have little itty-bitty retro decorations on the bases.
