House smells like a bonfire

We had our first fire in our lovely open fireplace last night. My dozy husband did not put it out properly, so at 4am, I wander down to a smoke filled room.

It stank, and still stinks now. I have vacuumed the rug and moped the floor, have cleaned out the fire place, had all the windows open since 4am. I have sprayed some fabreeze about. House sill stinks. I stink. It hate it!

I have washed the curtains and have put out the furniture to "air"- it all smells fine. I have lit some scented candles.

What else can I do?? It stinks!!

I do not have a oil burner incensey type thing. I do not have a humidifier.

Is there some miralcle product that will not cost much I can use?

My house is freezing, so I am going to have to close the windows soon. Help me please!!

And yes, I am in the possession of 2 new smoke alarms.

I have no idea about the smell but I would be concerend about why the room filled with smoke? You should be able to leave the fire without smoke coming into the room.

My DH had "stored" wood by the side of the fire, and it had caught.

We had our chimney sewpt the day before, so it was basically our fault.
