Can I machine-wash this item?

The label says not.

The item in question is a dress from Gap which cost the relatively small amount of £30. I really don't want to fork out for dry-cleaning for it.

It is a cotton/nylon/spandex mix with 60% being cotton. I understand from googling that spandex is also lycra. I'm a bit annoyed that I didn't check this in the shop, but hey-ho.

I'd normally bung it in and see what happens but I like the dress and I'm a bit short on stuff to wear to work at the moment.

So, what say you, mumsnetters? Can I bung it in the washing machine or should I put in the bag where it will stay for the drycleaners?

If your machine has a hand wash/cold cycle I would bung it in.

I regularly wash dry-clean only clothes.

Sounds like a good plan.

With stuff like this I would hand wash it. Very lukewarm water and a mild solution of woollite or similar. Give it a swish in the bath and a good rinse or two. I then spin on a very slow speed.

With some dry clean items it is because you cannot iron/finish them properly (e.g. lined suits)
