Fruit scones

Can I make fruit scones without baking powder? I have an unopened tub but is use by July so just wondered if I really need it? Would self raising flour do the job without it?

I did a quick Google and there are a fair few recipes that don't add baking powder. Self raising flour should be just fine.
However, the unopened packet of baking powder will be fine for you to use, and I imagine it is a best before date rather than a use by date.
