Dishwasher is blocked. It is probably clogged with food Blush....

Have tried a plunger but no joy.

Can I just pour a sink unblocker down? Soda crystals???

Any other ideas before have to resort to pricey repair man?? Please???

Thank you in advance

Blocked where? Please describe the symptoms.

MrsCurly · 08/10/2010 12:56

The bottom is covered in water and bits of food Blush Blush. There is a drainage hole at the bottom which is blocked, but when I put my hand down there is nothing obvious to move, no large lumps of food. Have tried plunging this drainage hole but nothing happens.

It was not me who put UNSCRAPED plates in it.

Can you get to the filter? I wonder if it is that which is clogged and stopping everything flowing out.
Is your dishwasher near the sink/washing machine or on the same outflow as something like that? Is it possible that the waste pipe from one of those is causing the blockage?

MrsCurly · 08/10/2010 14:34

Thank you, but I've pulled out filter without any luck. Blockage must be in the pipe flowing out. I'm pretty sure it is being caused by food. Must have built up in the pipes.

Is it ok to put the stuff you pour down a blocked sink in to a dishwasher? Could I pour it down the pipe where the filter was to shift the blockage??

Are you sure it is blocked? It could be the pump that has stopped working.

MrsCurly · 08/10/2010 14:47

ok tell me more about that? How would I know?
I assumed blocked because it won't drain and there is a serial offender in the house who never scrapes the plates.

You need to get it to the pump out bit of the wash cycle then listen for the pump working. Easy with a washing machine as they have a "drain" cycle but harder with a dishwasher.

Dishwashers don't drain like a sink. The waste water is pumped out so it's very unlikely to be a problem with a blocked pipe, particularly if the filter is clear as that catches all the debris.

Thank you - will have a try. Sounds like I might need a repair man...

Thanks again for the advice

Agree with nocake - if a dishwasher is stopped before it gets to the final rinse it can do this as well. People often thing they've broken. Put it on hygiene cycle if you can (take everything out first). This will put very hot water down and if it's greasy clean it a bit.

If it is blocked, you need to get a plumbers snake down the drain and clean it but you would find your sink would also block if it was nearby.

MrsCurly · 08/10/2010 20:14

The sink is right next to it and not blocked. Thank you for all the advice. Will put it on and see what happens. And will stop poking it.

DO put a dishwasher tablet in with the next cycle if empty - but DO NOT PUT WASHING UP LIQUID IN to get rid of grease, unless you want a foamy soupy kitchen. Grin

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/10/2010 20:21

Have you tried running a cycle with dishwasher cleaner in it? This is different from dishwasher tablets. The bottle goes in the cutlery basket (usually) and you put it on, empty, on a normal cycle.

MrsCurly · 09/10/2010 19:43

Dishwasher fixed. You are all saints. Ran it on a 70 degrees intensive clean programme, empty but with tablet, and tis sorted.

Thank you all so, SO much.

Huurah! :)

herogirl · 19/03/2013 10:52

I have tried all that and it is still blocked but cannot get to it because it is integrated, can I put sink unblocker in it as last resort

PigletJohn · 19/03/2013 11:02

no that is liable to damage it.

If you have taken out all the filters, and cleaned them (there may be three, check the instructions) then it might be a fault in the pump.

If it goes through a wash cycle, squirting water through the arms, then you can try baling out the dirty water, and running it, empty, with just a dishwasher tablet.

It is possible, but requires considerable neglect, to block the internal pipes with fatty deposits, but in this case, the machine fails to wash effectively.

I don't like integrated appliances.

Look for where the grey waste hose from the appliance joins the drain, probably under the sink. Pull it out and see if it is blocked.

Can i use 'one shot' drain unblocking chemical liquid to unblock dishwasher ?
