Hi
I want to have 2 alcoves fitted in my living room but have no idea what to expect pricewise. I'd prefer to pay for a job then per day but at the moment I have no idea what can it cost at all. Any experience much appreciated

We have paid approx £15 ph + materials for similar work.

For our alcove, I had a cupboard with 2 shelves and soft close doors built in the bottom third. Then shelves above. Plus double socket inside the cupboard with circular piece cut out of the top of the cupboard so that a lamp could be plugged in.

Cost £150 and it's been brilliant.

About seven years ago I had two "invisible-support" shelves fitted in my studio. All I remember is that I used to pay a college-trained joiner £30 per hour, and they seemed very cheap.
Wish I was still in same area to employ him again, even at what seems large hourly rate.

Wow 150 seems cheap!

My friend ( in London) paid 700£ for hers and it was 4 years ago....
I have someone coming tonight to price it up so I will post what they come up with.

Yes it was a rare bargain I think. Must add that it is in no way fancy, so no architrave or anything and I painted it.

It was the carpenter employed by a builder who'd done a lot of work for us so he charged us a day rate of £120 plus a token sum for materials. Said he had them all 'knocking around in the yard'. Took him less than a day. He was muttering about how he could do this kind of thing in his sleep.

£700 sounds steep but was it fancy?

I'm in Surrey.
