slugs in the kitchen

It's that time of year again! When I go into the kitchen late in the eveing there are generally 2 or 3 slugs wandering around the kitchen counter.
I make sure all the food is put away after tea and, as it's an old house, they can come from anywhere. Does anyone else have this problem and can suggest how to get rid of them?

Copper tape on the perimeter - it's in the sale at lakeland. It gives them an electric shock.
