Where to buy carpets?

Many years ago we went to somewhere like Allied Carpets. Is that what people still do?

I go to my little independant shop with a lovely old bloke in there who has loads of huge rolls and cut offs.

Hes a star.

I go to the big names for ideas and samples then order on the internet. The trick is to get a reputable carpet fitter to measure your room (s) sizes get your underlay, gripper, room bars etc and use his measurements when ordering carpets. He'll be able to advise on which way pile should run etc too. try fabflooring.co.uk

I did wonder whether it would be better/easier to go to local independent shop but have never bought a carpet (as an adult).
Memories of trawling aircraft hanger type warehouses are flooding back.

I have to say that I'm shocked at the price of carpet but then the last one we bought when I was about 10 years old.

Definitely go to your independent.

When we moved into our house, we needed new carpet in three rooms. Carpetright quoted 3,000 whilst our independent did it for 800. This included the fitting, grips and new underlay.

I'd also recommeend going for a carpet which will hide marks and fluff etc. My Mum once bought a 'flat' colour and it literally showed up all bits of fluff etc and needed hoovering every 5 mins. We bought carpets that have 'specks' of colour.

I had problems with every independant in our area, trying to sell us really expensive carpet. Some were not even interested. It was a shame as I always like to support local business. In the end we ordered the carpet from carpetright and had a local carpet fitter do the work for us. 3 bedrooms, office, hall, stairs landing, lounge and conservatory came to £1600 including fitting costs. Carpet and underlay was 20% off. Grippers and Door bars were extra. This was our first carpet experience as adults, 7 years with bits and bobs given to us it's odd to finally have carpet. We did find it cheaper having same carpet throughout, as the offcuts from the lounge and conservatory did the office, hall and landing. So not so much wastage.
