Tell me about your butter dish...

We eat butter in our house.....I know it's bad for you but it tastes so yummy!

I need a butter dish but can't decide which type i want. A dish you put butter in with a lid or a plate with a lid. I'm a bit of a novice. Have no idea if these 2 types have different types.

Do you keep yours in the fridge or not?

Any guidance gratefully received.

i have a plate with a lid on the top

usually with one or 2 cat hairs in it.

LinenBasket · 23/09/2010 15:49

not kept in fridge. Even more cat hairs in there.

Heartsease · 23/09/2010 15:51

Mine is like a little board with a ceramic cover you put over it. I find I can't get a good angle of attack with the lidded dish kind. Though maybe those are OK if you're a scraper rather than a chunk-cutter-offer.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 23/09/2010 15:52

I just leave butter on the side

Butter isn't bad for you (or at least, it isn't bad for me, nope, no way).

We keep ours in a mini Le Creuset (we had it in an old blue pate dish before but the lid broke) and we keep it out of the fridge.

orangina · 23/09/2010 16:10

Dish and lid. Easier to limit mess that way, easier to wash up. Hate scooping butter out of a bowl thing.

(can't beleive there is a blog!)

icapturethecastle · 23/09/2010 16:14

I have a Koziol Butter Dish and I keep it out of the fridge most of the time (but never sure if this correct but hey I am still here and well so must be ok) I am a recent butter dish convert and love it!! Have just been looking at butterdish blog - would love the butterfingers one.

Blatherskite · 23/09/2010 16:17

We have a butter dish. Plate with lid job. I agree with Heartease - makes getting the butter out easier.

Lives in cool, dark cupboard with the bread and goes in the dishwasher whenever it's empty.

Had heard that a little butter is much better for you than margarine. Too many chemicals and processes in margarine. Butter is natural

KnitterNotTwitter · 23/09/2010 16:19

We have an insulated dish with lid one from Lakeland (here)
Tis very nice but can get a bit greasy fingered looking if DS gets his fingers in the butter. He's 2 and likes to eat lumps of butter...

It lives on top of the breadbin!

thumbwitch · 23/09/2010 16:20

Lovely butter dish (tray and lid), cut glass job a bit like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=images.oneofakindantiques.com/5243_pressed_glass_butter_dish_1.jpg&imgrefurl=www.oneofakindantiques.com/catalog/5243_pressed_pattern_glass_covered_butter_dish_canadian_design_1.htm&usg=__o4ZB5Ez3FWOOQuhA3X9z6kYfJJE=&h=419&w=640&sz=42&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=Vid_daRwIe-tzM:&tbnh=136&tbnw=176&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbutter%2Bdish%2Bglass%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG%26biw%3D1137%26bih%3D440%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:10%2C115&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=304&vpy=140&dur=312&hovh=182&hovw=278&tx=164&ty=97&ei=DnCbTJP7JMbIcYqZ5d0J&oei=AHCbTJePOsGPcey-2M4J&esq=3&page=1&ndsp=10&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:0&biw=1137&bih=440" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this, lives out on the side at the moment but will end up in the fridge in summer or the contents become a puddle of melted grease.

Butter far better for you than chemically altered oils, just don't have too much :)

Shodan · 23/09/2010 16:41

I've got a stainless steel one. It's more of a bowl with a shallow lid than a plate with a domed lid, if that makes sense. I find I make less mess with this type- but I am a
scraper, not a chunk-cutter-off Grin.

It took me agesto find one too- I didn't want glass/ceramic because I'm clumsy and would break it for sure.

It was quite dear, as well, I thought, so it had better last.

Shodan · 23/09/2010 16:43

Oh and it lives in my 'breakfast cupboard'.

Since I had loads more available space when I had the kitchen redone, I now have a shelf with tea, coffee, jams etc etc on it.

I is dead posh.

PaulineCampbellJones · 23/09/2010 16:45

I have a Guzzini one. I keep it out on the side, DH tidies it into the fridge. Butterdish wars!

oopsandbabycoconuts · 23/09/2010 16:58

I have a blue and white cornishware one bowl with lid much easier for us scrapers. :)

MrsMI love the look of the Alessi but it doesnt sound big enough for us!

shodan I can only dream of a breakfast cupboard. Someone mentioned breadbin earlier...oh for the space!

Amazon have a nice range of spotty ceramic dishes but i think now having heard your advice that cutting chunks esp when baking probably more my thing than scraping!

I had thought if i found one i liked I'd leave it out unless weather really hot then I'd stick it in the fridge

OP posts:
thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 23/09/2010 17:49

I have this one

ThingOne · 23/09/2010 17:55

Plate with lid is the only way to go!

NoahAndTheWhale · 23/09/2010 18:09

I have a Cath Kidston one that DH got for me. He said it was prob cheapest thing in shop (apart from keyrings). Stays on work surface

NoahAndTheWhale · 23/09/2010 18:15

We did have a stainless steel one from freecycle but dh never liked it and it got "lost" when we moved house Hmm

MadameCastafiore · 23/09/2010 18:18

I have a Charlotte Watson creamware one which sits on the dresser with lots of whistles, small screwdrivers, rubber bands etc in - is very very pretty.

The butter stays in it's lurpak carton as I can then just chuck it away and it is not something else I have to wash up.

Blatherskite · 23/09/2010 19:39

But that must mean it's Lurpack Spreadable Madame, which is not Real butter.
