Bunk Beds - how long will we get out of a set?

DS is 7 and we need to buy bunk beds for his room for when GPs visit (DD will sleep on the bottom bunk when they visit and they will use her bed with pull out guest bed).

The lovely bed with pull out guest bed is currently in DS' room but there is no longer room to pull it out comfortably so we feel a bunk bed would be better for his room.

I'm worried, though, that within a couple of years, that DS will feel he is too old for a bunk bed, and wondered what other peoples experiences were of this - how long will we get out of a bunk bed?

I recently got rid of one set bunk beds in my 15 year old DS's room. He now sleeps on them when he visits his dad.

I also have another set in 10 year old DS's room. My 17 year old DS occassionally sleeps on the bottom bunk when my mother visits from the States.

They are also very useful if you have a sleep over.

PS I slept on a top bunk my first year at university.
