Depends on the quality.

You might be able to get a cut off if you ask around the shops.

You can get carpet to suit any budget. There's a bargain carpet place near us that do a whole house for £150! Obviously it's the cheapest, thinnest, least attractive carpet but it covers bare floorboards which is what we needed when we were broke after buying our first house.

We recently had our stairs and landing carpeted in decent stuff and it was about £500.

So basically, you can pay what you want, but you get what you pay for IYSWIM.

I always forget that I'm going to have to pay for underlay too.

If you buy cheap carpet it can be made to look much better by expert fitting and the best quality underlay you can afford.

You can buy an offcut to do some stairs and small hall. Get someone to measure up for you. Some places sell 12 foot square offcuts for about £100 if you are lucky! I can recommend a couple of places ion West London for that sort of thing.

Don't forget though that you will need underlay and gripper if you don't already have carpet on your stairs. You don't have to buy these from the same place as the carpet. I understand some of the online shops are cheap for these items.

Thanks everyone :).
I got a decent one it was on offer and has cost me 160.00 with underlay, grippers and fitting.

where from? I was quoted £470 and £370 for carpet, underlay and grippers for just the stairs, thinking it would only be about 150 :(

comewhinewithme · 18/09/2010 18:23

I am in Sheffield ASLD don't know if you are near there?

The carpet was 80.00,then 35.00 for fitting and the rest was grippers and underlay.

I have fell very lucky as it was on offer it should have been 160 for just the carpet.

You can get some decent carpets on Ebay if you know the sizes you need.
