Carpets vs stair runners, any thoughts?

I've taken up my minging stair carpet and was wondering what the feeling was about fitted carpet vs stair runners? Any views gratefully received!

Stair runners look lovely, so cool. What sort of condition are your stairs in? That would affect how good runners would look.

Thanks for replying sunshine - they'd need to be sanded but are fundamentally ok. There's clearly been a runner there in the past as the sides are painted and the middle is nekked wood. Don't know which would wear better or if there are tripping risks with runners? I've got a half landing.

I think the wear issue will depend more on the quality of the carpet/runner than which it is. And I would have thought the tripping risk would be similar for both if you have them properly fitted. Not sure, so hope someone with more knowledge comes along for you!
