Fold in 2 so you only sew the narrow end once.

Conceal within sock so when top is turned over you can't see it in wear.

2 options:

  1. along the instep, on the outside (although I always think this would be very uncomfortable)

  2. folded in half, as catinthehat said, and either sewn inside low enough not to show when turned over or outside so hidden when the sock is turned over.

thanks very much. i think i get what you mean. Do you only sew the ends so that when the sock stretches the label doesn't restrict the sock or come undone?

Yes, I would also put the stitching vertically down a rib so it doesn't rip as the boy stuffs his muscly leg in the sock.

thanks again.

PMSL at "stuffs his muscly leg in the sock"

obtain indelible marker. scribble name on sole of sock. return to Mumsnet.

schroeder · 06/09/2010 20:25

I sewed them folded over in a loop on the inside of the cuff so the name isn't on show when worn and does not scratch their little leggies.Grin

I am so looking forward to this joy when DD starts school. Hmm

I would write on the bottom of sole twaseverthus but the bulk of the sock is black. I have now sewn one label on the outside where I think it will be covered when the top of the sock is turned down and I've sewn one on the inside of the other sock, slightly differently.

I shall now wait and see if i get any comments from DS after he wears them on wednesday. And also wait and see how quickly they fall off as I am not renowned for my sewing Smile

TwasEverThus - thank you for that idea. I also had to label his regular sports socks so I've written on the soles of those. See how long it lasts huh?

Buy several cheap sports socks off the market or somewhere similar......they never come back anyway....treat then as disposable objects.

you can actually get iron on transfers that are for socks - I got some and they work quite well. However, since realised that DS never takes his socks off, so was fairly pointless!
think I got mine from easy2label or somesuch or labels4 kids. If you google iron on transfers you'll find some.

Black socks - the b*ggers!

I have in the past taken a needle and thread and looped a few stitches in a contrasting colour over the rim of the turndown, just enough to see the flash of colour. (Did this before ds could read, so he knew which were his socks at daycare).

Ladymuck · 08/09/2010 12:13

I use iron on labels along the instep on the outside. Comfortable and visible. Have always had socks returned. Ds1's poncey socks cost £7 per pair.....

thanks guys. He's gone in today for his first day and it's games afternoon. I think I might have sewn the label too low down and it wont be covered when he turns the top over his shin pads. Never mind. I can't get everything perfect can I? Smile
