The carpets have not been cleaned for years, and I really need to tackle this.

Should I hire a domestic or industrial one? (there are no stairs)

What machine works best?

What fluid?

How do I get really bad stains out?

How long does it take to do? and how long does it take to dry afterwards before you can replace the furniture?

Any advice, tips, appreciated!

i will being doing this once we have finished renovating (got the carpets befor we started DOH!! and having had 2 kids since double DOH!) i am just planing on renting from either johnsons or homebase though prob johnsons as they do a 48 hour hire time i think if i remember correctly its 6-8 hrs drying time i intend to send dc's off to mil's and dh and i spend a day and a half being really thougher. You buy th fluid when you hire. Vanish is really really good for stains (got dark purple nail varnish out of my lovely front room carpet) though had to do it once a month for 2-3 months to get it 'perfect'. Thats all i can add really hope it helps Smile

We hired a Rug Doctor from the dry cleaner's at Asda (Johnsosn's I think). It was amazing. The carpet we always thought was dark brown was actually terracotta ! We used the Heavy Traffic Areas fluid.
