Smelly toilet carpet...

We have recently moved into a rented house, it's lovely albeit a little old and rickety. My one gripe as they really did make it lovely before we moved in, is the downstairs loo (just a water closet type thing with no sink) smells of old, old wee. DH refuses to use it and just uses the one upstairs. The floor is carpeted and I was wondering if this could be the cause of the smell? How do you clean a carpet without a fancy carpet cleaner?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Are you using a letting agents?

If so, request that they send a carpet cleaning company out at landlords expense, because it stinks of urine.
