Cleaning upholstery?

I've got 2 sofas I really like that are upholstered in a cream chenille fabric. They are filty :( and need cleaning badly. I'd like to do this myself, I've tried one of those VAX machines and it was crap TBH so I am wondering about steam cleaning.

Does anyone have any recommendations for steam cleaners that I could use on upholstery and hopefully carpets too?

Unless you're VeRy rich. It is poss to hire those machines I think. Or put on throws? Smile

can you remove the covers?
or have the sofa "serviced"? we get loads of leaflets through the mailbox advertising this.
or look here

that is because there have a fire retadent (sp) in them.
I wash mine anyway, they are pure cotton and come out ok each time.
