I've got old cheapish thinnish (what were cream) fitted carpets in bedrooms. Any one have experiences with said machines?

They're ok, we did upstairs and living room rug, all cream. Easy to use and relatively cheap compared to getting someone in. It's also really satisfying when you throw the dirty water away!

I was thinking about this too.
I've got some quite bad stains on the stairs (cream carpet) does it work on specific stains as well as cleaning the general area?
Also, do you have to stay off the carpets til they dry?

You can get stain spotter for the stains and use it in conjunction with the cleaning solution. They don't take long to dry but it's fine to go on them once they're done. You might not want to put furniture back till they feel drier though. We used hss hire, they fully explained how to work the machine.
