I have also never used bleach, don*t really know what to do with it tbh.

Wow I am impressed.. I couldn't imagine a life without bleach.

The reason most people use bleach is to kill germs and remove stains.

I have a 1 yr old who loves the toilet atm so i put it down the loo every morning and swish it round with the brush then flush.

I have a white marble kitchen sideboard and sink which is old and tatty so i bleach it once a week to remove the teabag stains and food stains in the sink. I use it to add to the mop bucket when i clean the kitchen floor too.

And I had a damp- mould problem on my bedroom wall last winter to i used neat bleach on a rag to kill the spores every week or so.

Sometimes I use it neat on whites when they get stains that the washing powder hasn't removed.

So what do you use to do these jobs?

plantwoman · 21/08/2010 14:43

I also use it down the loo - I have tried other stuff and it just doesn't work. I can't bear toilet brushes, so chucking bleach down does the trick.

mousymouse · 21/08/2010 14:44

all purpose cleaner and white vinegar mainly. plus loo cleaner for the loo. use biological washing powder and 40°c temp is usually enough for stains.

never used bleach - then a while ago started using it v ocassionaly to get rid of limescale in v old loo.

ethelina · 21/08/2010 14:53

Only use bleach occasionally down the kitchen sink if it smells. One bottle probably lasts 9-10 months. Use harpic or equivalent in the loo. I hate loo brushes too.

deaddei · 21/08/2010 14:59

Blimey ethelina, I use about 2 bottles a week!

ethelina · 21/08/2010 15:15

I do use other stuff y'know [wink}. Not totally scummy!

Seriously though, what advantage does bleach really have over other proprietary cleaners? According to the harpic bottle in my loo its "5x better than bleach" And bleach smells horrible.

stofstg · 21/08/2010 17:43

i only use bleach for the loo myself. Everywhere else i use other products including some ecover products. Like someone else said, my lo has an obsession with the loo too so i wanna make sure that its germ free. I've used other cleaners in the loo such as toilet duck, harpic and ecover before but always return to domestos. Something reassuring about bleach down the loo for some reason. I would never use bleach for anything else though as i believe its probably not good for anyone's health

nettie · 21/08/2010 17:55

No, never used bleach, makes me gag!

greentriangle · 21/08/2010 18:00

I don't use bleach - I put harpic down the loo, use antibac wipes for things that are dirty, baby wipes for things that just need a wipe and cif for the bath/sink that sort of thing.

I think it is quite common to use bleach every day - MIL does.

thelunar66 · 21/08/2010 18:29

Hate bleach, despite being brought up by a mother who bleached everything.

I always manage to get it on my clothes and ruin them, so have now stopped buying it altogether.

there are better things out there to use.

Am a bit of a Cilit Bang Lime and Grime whore though Blush

pirateparty · 21/08/2010 18:35

Never used it either. Scares me a little bit. Have a clean house though!

ethelina · 21/08/2010 18:36

Not allowed to buy cillit bang due to DH always deliberately Hmm misreading it and PHSL.

The loo and the patio, kills weeds and keeps it bird shit free. 2x bottles a week.

RobynLou · 22/08/2010 01:30

alouiseg If anyone ever tries to dig up your patio and grow anything there they'll be stuffed!

I use bleach in the loo and down the pluholes occasionally.

My mum is uber clean and never uses it - cream cleaner and dettol on everything at hers. the smell of dettol will always take me back to my childhood!

Bunbaker · 22/08/2010 08:41

Like HoochieThe CoochieMomma I am an Ecover girl and only use bleach down the loo, to soak dishcloths in and occasionally on whites that I can't shift the stains from.
I have tried Ecover toilet cleaner and find it ineffective and the smell is horrible.

mamaloco · 22/08/2010 08:44

There is bleach in "cilit bang" and most toilet cleaner!

WowOoo · 22/08/2010 08:45

Isn't that Harpic stuff bleach anyway? I always thought it was just heavily perfumed bleach.

I use bleach to pour down sinks and to clean the toilet. Also use harpic.
And have my borax, vinegar, lemon juice concoctions.

The reason why bleach wins is that i am sure that the yucky germs are killed. With vinegar and lemon juice etc I'm not so sure.

mamaloco · 22/08/2010 08:58

wowooo You are right, vinegar and lemon juice don't kill germs (actually you need germs to make vinegar and have you seen a lemon rot?). Actually washing with lemon juice can make things worse because of the sugars, it creates a breading ground for most germs.
But then not everything needs to be germ free. There is ads on washing mashine soaps and paints which kill 99.9% of bacteries, why? Confused the hand soaps were bad enough!

Conundrumish · 22/08/2010 10:31

I gave myself really bad tennis elbow when I stopped using cleaning products and started using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda/elbow grease a couple of years ago. My arm was agony for a year until I had physiotherapy. I'm back on the hard stuff now!

I use bleach for washing dishcloths and floor cloths. I used to use it on the outside of the loo and inside the loo, but it tarnished the fittings. The smell of bleach is quite comforting - makes you think everything is clean.

stressedHEmum · 22/08/2010 10:34

I never use bleach, either. I tend to use Ecover type stuff, hot, soapy water, and things I make myself from things like soda crystals, vinegar and the like. I only use either homemade or eco-friendly laundry stuff and dish washing stuff, as well.

I can't stand the smell of bleach and don't really think it's that safe around kids, tbh.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 22/08/2010 10:36

My mother used bleach for everything - she would regularly get the stains out of coffee cups by leaving half cups of bleach in the kitchen. I hate the smell.

I have never bought it.

Shaz10 · 22/08/2010 10:39

I use HG mould remover in the shower (bleach), pour bleach down the toilet and sinks and use it (diluted) to clean the dishcloths. I also put a drop in and fill the sink to get rid of the tea stains.
I agree the smell makes me think things are clean! Blush

Scuttlebutter · 22/08/2010 23:48

Bleach down the loo here. Also, we have a white plastic sink in the kitchen and one of our chopping boards is white plastic. Both regularly cleaned/sanitised with bleach solutions. I like using Zoflora disinfectant too on the kitchen surfaces and floor from time to time. Bleach is also handy for whites, as a kind of nuclear option. I use the thin, cheap bleach in the kitchen and the thick bleach for the loos.
