wwyd stair carpet knackered

our stair carpet as basically had it, it is ten years old and the cheapest you could buy back then so I think that we have had our money's worth out of it, but now it is threadbare and it's come unstuck from the second to top step so it's getting a bit dangerous

carpet cleaner won't bring it up but we could nail or glue it back down to make it safe...which is what dh thinks we should do (when I see we I mean me Hmm

I think that rather than have a manky looking carpet on the stairs and landing we should pull it up, bin it and see what the stairs are like underneath....I have pulled the bit that is loose away and the stairs need cleaning up, but I was thinking I could gloss them?

Can't stain them as someone must have had a runner at some point and there is white gloss for about three inches either side of the steps

we cannnot afford a new carpet anytime soon would be a couple of years as there is more dire stuff that needs doing

so wwyd stick with a dirty carpet or take your chances with how bad the stairs look...Confused

If it's dangerous, you have to act sooner rather than later. So stick it down while you decide. Personally I prefer carpets just down the middle, so would like your gloss side bits. Bare wood might be very noisy.

Sorry, haven't helped at all!

i vote stick it back down to make it safe and put up with it until you can afford a new one

Take it up and paint. Put a runner along the landing if it needs one for winter/nightime loo visits.

We once made do with carpeted treads and painted risers which was fine for a while -although conker brown isn't the easiest colour to live with Confused

thanks for the replies Grin

I pulled it up in the end, all the backing on the carpet had turned to dust which was pretty gross, wonder if that's helo with the dc's excema actually

Steps don't look too bad actually a couple of the risers need filling but I can deal with that and have started sanding the treads to try and get the residue of the carpet glue off them

I have decided on a runner, but when looking for one saw some crapet treads that you just stick on the treads obv Grin that look quite good and are in my proce range now so am going to do that until we can afford something better

the carpet was that knackered you can't really hear a difference now it's gone lol
