OMG maggots in high chair

Toodisgustingtoadmit · 03/08/2010 10:08

I've just found some maggots in dss high chair. I might have to be sick.

I have no defence except it's one of those ridiculous padded things with lots of nooks and crannies. I clearly forgot to take the cushion off before we went on holiday and I've been so busy since dd finished school it's only had a cursory wipe.

Please nflict the punishment I deserve. The rest of my house is fairly clean but I dread to think how ill ds could have been.

Am off to Ikea to buy one of those hose down plastic ones.

Uuurgh!

Straight in the bin?

Or a her-uge disinfect job?

ShinyAndNew · 03/08/2010 10:11

Are maggots harmful? I know they are icky but I don't think they would have caused any lasting damage to your ds. Some people eat them don't they?

Hot water and a disinfectant spray should be enough imo.

BIN.IT.

Toodisgustingtoadmit · 03/08/2010 10:14

I've doused it in bleach and thrown it in the garden.

I can't possibly tell anyone in real life. This is clearly a wake up call that my cleaning is not what it should be

I wouldn't bin it.
Just strip it down outside, cover with disinfectant spray and give it a good scrub with very hot water. Then spray down with hose pipe.

snala · 03/08/2010 10:16

PUT IT IN THE BIN THIS SECOND!!!!!!

They're no more disgusting than flies, really. A bit of Dettol left to work for a bit, a really good hose down and it will be as clean as it could be.

You could put the padded seat in the washer I bet, and perhaps start doing so once a week if it's a bugger to wipe clean.

WinkyWinkola · 03/08/2010 10:21

High chairs are notoriously dirty. And flies lay eggs and maggots appear very quickly.

I wouldn't worry too much. Nobody died.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 03/08/2010 10:26

We had a high chair with a cushion like that (nooks and crannies and corners -- not maggots AFAIK). It is really hard to keep them from being manky, don't be too hard on yourself.

Dettol wipes were the simplest thing I found, quick whoosh around it and in the nooks after meals (or at least, daily). Once a week or so (more like fortnight actually) I took the cushion off completely and showered it down, directing spray into corners, then air dried before putting back on.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 03/08/2010 10:27

Agree with those who say you needn't chuck it, btw.

colditz · 03/08/2010 10:29

throw
It
Away

then blow up your house for good measure

gip gip gip

colditz · 03/08/2010 10:30

Shinyandnew, which people? Disgusting people? Gross, wrong poeple?

whomovedmychocolate · 03/08/2010 10:35

Ummm wiggly

If you have been away on holiday it's hardly a surprise is it. Normally your cleaning routine would have dealt with this, so stop beating yourself up.

Now if you'd posted - was feeding DC cereal in the high chair and suddenly noticed it was moving, I'd have been shocked. As it is, you are simply the victim of high temperatures and normal parental rushing.

Just clean it properly and move on.

But antilops are much more easy to clean. Mine goes in the dishwasher every few weeks (with the legs off obviously).

ShinyAndNew · 03/08/2010 10:36

Crazy people methinks A lad I know once ate one to prove he was 'ard. There was no lasting damage. They eat them on I'm a celeb too don't they?

whomovedmychocolate · 03/08/2010 10:38

If you've ever eaten a donor kebab when pissed, you've probably eaten maggots

They are quite good for you actually, lots of protein and deep fried apparently, they taste like crispy chicken!

Personally I'd rather eat catfood though.

pippop1 · 06/08/2010 17:36

Are you sure they weren't bits of white rice? I'm sure they must have been.

wastingaway · 06/08/2010 19:07

Maggots aren't actually dangerous, but food that's been left til the maggots appear will have bacteria teeming.

Bin it and get to Ikea.

thisisyesterday · 06/08/2010 19:09

oh just disinfect it and carry on using it. it's not that bad
