Carpet cleaners which one - Vax or Bissel or other?

We have alot of carpeted rooms and they need to be cleaned before we put the house on the market. Got a quote of over £500 from a professional carpet cleaner and thats just ludicrous - although thats 5 large rooms, 2 stairs and one hallway and 3 sofas.

Do carpet cleaners get regular stains out - tea/calpol/red wine? Can they clean sofas?(not expensive sofas just dirty ones!). Vax, Bissell? Which model? How fast do they dry?

You can rent a rug doctor from most BandQs, I believe that it's not too expensive!
If you want to buy one though I'm a fan of Vax.
I bought a small, cheap (£80) upright Vax carpet cleaner which I like very much, it's shifted all of the stains I've had but it can't be used on a sofa because it's an upright. If I do the carpets just before bed they're dry in the morning. I wish I'd paid a bit more for one with a hand attachment for my sofa though!

Oh yes and it won't do stairs either which is a pain!

Ooooh Vax everytime!! We have the 6131 and it is fantastic, having 2 messy kids that spill drinks at any given opportunity this is a god send.
