cleaning manky gold bath taps???

Our house needs quite a bit of work and we can't do it all at the moment due to lack of funds, so we are doing low-budget room makeovers.

The bathroom has gold coloured taps and fittings. The taps are quite marked and I am just wondering what to clean them with to make them look shiny again??? Are bathroom taps usually brass or what??

All tips and ideas gratefully received...

try using a lime scale remover like limescales using a tooth brush helps to get in to all those little gaps then buff. dont leave it on and come back latter or it may tarnish.

Oh dear. Too impatient was I for a sensible reply so I used Brasso and now I have taken off all the gold finish on the sodding taps. Whoops.

Oh dear

I was going to suggest bicarb and vinegar

Erm...do they look ok?

They look shocking, so ebay it is. Will have a look now.

I would prefer to replace with chrome but unfortunately the shower has a large brass (effect?) water control thingummy that runs off the mains and we can't replace that without re-tiling, which is a step too far. So I think we're stuck with getting more gold, gah!
