What to bulk mince with?

MrsGokWan · 20/07/2010 12:32

I've been left with about 300gms of mince and need to use it up. What can I bulk it up with? and more importantly what can I make with it? It has to feed a family of 5.

Thank you ladies

Brown lentils
Bulgar wheat
Rice
Breadcrumbs
Vegetables
Potatoes

You could make burgers, hash, a pasta bake (sorry!) where the mince was just a layer, stew and dumplings...loads of things.

MimieD · 20/07/2010 12:35

make some spaghetti bolognaise. Just use a jar for sauce (or canned tomatos) and add veggies like peas, carrots, mushrooms or peppers...

OrmRenewed · 20/07/2010 12:36

Red lentils give an interesting texture and add fibre and protein without extra fat.

Lastyearsmodel · 20/07/2010 12:38

Aubergine adds a lovely silky texture to beef. Pulses also nice, esp. for middle eastern-type dishes (moussaka, spicy meatballs, etc)

MathsMadMummy · 20/07/2010 12:39

get a tin of pulses - kidney beans, haricot, flageolet, anything! or chick peas. you can get mixed cans.

add a tin of tomatoes, onion, veg, and have it with rice or pasta. or chop up some potatoes into it to make a stew

TrinityRhino · 20/07/2010 12:39

chick peas?

lamplighter · 20/07/2010 12:43

Mushrooms?

MrsJamin · 20/07/2010 12:54

finely chopped celery

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 20/07/2010 12:57

Finely chopped spinach and / or porridge oats. You could make a batch of chilli and bulk it out further with a tin of mixed beans or kidney beans - even baked beans.Oh and tinned tomatoes.

happilyeverafter · 20/07/2010 13:05

Celery, grated carrot, onions, toms, chickpeas (or any pulses) breadcrumbs/crushed cream crackers (for burgers/meatballs)

Then serve with pasta/rice or spuds

MrsGokWan · 20/07/2010 13:06

Wow! you lot are quick

Now off to rummage around my cupboards and see what I have that has been suggested.

Right we have lentils do I just cook them and add to the mince?

Have onions, carrots, tin of sweetcoorn, tin of tomatoes, mushrooms as well as well.

Thought I could fry off the onions and mince, add lentils, grate carrot and put in to bulk it as well, add sweetcorn, tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic, herbs and possibly an oxo cube to make it a bit richer. Serve with pasta.

How does that sound?

Thank goodness it's nearly payday.

What time do you want us round?

MaryBS · 20/07/2010 13:22

tinned tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms and kidney beans?

MrsGokWan · 20/07/2010 13:53

Oooh! we have kidney beans, borlotti, aduki and butter beans. Which would you add?

OP posts:
ShirleyKnot · 20/07/2010 13:55

More mince

MrsGokWan · 20/07/2010 13:57

Sorry shirley we have no more mince. DH used the rest for a snack

lamplighter glad you think it sounds good

ShirleyKnot · 20/07/2010 13:58

It's the only sensible option I'm afraid.

SpottyMuldoon · 20/07/2010 14:00

Oohh, I do mince, onion, garlic, mushrooms, pepper, herbs, stock cube, tinned tomatoes then put it in a dish, layer with (cheap dried) pasta. Grated cheese on top and in the oven or under the grill. Yum.

Or leave out tinned tomatoes and layer with mashed potato instead.

From your choice of beans I would add kidney beans and chilli powder and serve with rice.

thumbwitch · 20/07/2010 14:01

Beans - kidney would be favourite out of those you have; if you need more add the borlotti as well.

SpottyMuldoon · 20/07/2010 14:02

I cook the pasta first obviously.

Lastyearsmodel · 20/07/2010 14:23

DP does that too - looks at a pack of 6 sausages and sees 2 sausage sandwiches, instead of sausage casserole for family of 4.

MrsGokWan · 20/07/2010 15:08

spottymuldoon will add that to my repotoire when we have some money and cheese no pots. either atm < feeling poor emoticon>

Kidney beans it is then and possibly a bit of chilli powder.

lastyearsmodel I have sausages for tomorrow (to go in a casserole) and 4 pork chops for the next day to be cut up and put in a stir fry type thing. I have hidden in the freezer behind things so they are not used before I need them. Payday Friday woohoo!!

If you make up a bolognese/chilli, add red wine and then a couple of handfuls of breadcrumbs - good way of using up stale bread.

I heard this is what italian housewives do, which makes me feel better about it! (strange i know.)
